What belongs in a Swiss riding-share contract? With clauses on fee, insurance, termination and sickness handling, fact-checked.

In Switzerland there is no legal requirement to put a riding share in writing. A verbal agreement is legally valid. As soon as there is damage, a dispute about the scope of care or a short-notice termination, however, only a written document protects both sides. Tierwelt.ch puts it well: «A riding share is legally a contract between the horse owner and the rider. If it is only verbal, the actual agreements are hardly provable later.»
A one-page A4 contract resolves most typical conflicts in advance.
First and last name, address, date of birth of both sides. For minors, parents sign as legal representatives (Art. 19 ZGB). The minor co-signs as far as they have the capacity of judgment for this particular question. Swiss law does not set a fixed minimum age for capacity of judgment.
Name, year of birth, breed, height, current training level, stable address, brand number if any.
Concretely: which days, how many hours, which activities (riding, grooming, walks). This avoids endless arguments.
Example: «Tuesday, Thursday and every other Saturday, from 4 pm. Activities: riding (dressage and light jumping), grooming and a share of stable work.»
The amount in CHF (see cost overview), the due date (e.g. the 5th of the month), the payment channel (bank transfer, IBAN) and consequences for late payment.
The rider takes out the add-on cover for «riding other people's horses» on their private liability policy. Zurich and AXA call it «Pferdemieter», Helvetia calls it «Mieter, Entlehner und Reitschüler fremder Pferde». More important than the sum insured is that this add-on is actually included. The animal-keeper liability stays with the owner.
What happens if the rider is sick? A possible arrangement is a proportional pause from 14 consecutive days of absence. For a long horse injury, the contract should set out a process.
Swiss standard is one month to the end of the month for both sides. Gross breaches of the contract allow immediate termination.
If the stable has house rules (times, arena slots, waste duty), reference them and confirm acknowledgement.
«The rider commits to taking out a private liability insurance with the add-on cover for riding other people's horses (Pferdemieter at Zurich and AXA, Mieter, Entlehner und Reitschüler fremder Pferde at Helvetia) and to presenting the policy on request.»
«If the rider becomes ill or injured and is absent for more than 14 consecutive days, the fee is reduced proportionally for the missed period. Notification: in writing (email is enough) within 7 days.»
«This agreement runs for an indefinite period. Both parties can terminate it in writing with 30 days notice to the end of any month. Gross neglect of the animal or dangerous behaviour towards the horse allows immediate termination.»
We do not host a universal template. Every contract depends on the stable situation, the horse and the personal relationship. Swiss Equestrian (formerly SVPS) and cantonal rider associations offer member templates.
Is an email confirmation enough? Legally yes, a Swiss contract of this kind does not require signatures. For serious disputes paper with real signatures is easier to prove.
What if the rider is a minor? Parents sign as legal representatives. The minor also signs if they have the capacity of judgment for this question. There is no fixed age limit in Swiss law.
Do you have to file the contract with the authorities? No. It is a private contract, no permit needed.
